Cash's Curriculum

Our Curriculum 

Our aim is to provide our pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum which equips them with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be successful in life. We value the importance of providing our pupils with a rich curriculum which makes cross curricular links and provides pupils with fun and engaging lessons. In order to achieve this, we use a range of resources to help us underpin a curriculum which is designed for all, despite different starting points.

We recognise the importance of core curriculum skills throughout our foundation curriculum and where possible we teach lessons in a cross-curricular way. Throughout our curriculum, we make best use of assessment information to enable our pupils to develop key skills and reach their goals and beyond through challenge from adults, their peers and themselves.

At Joseph Cash School all children experience our WOW enrichment curriculum. Children are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of outdoor and enterprise activities. WOW weeks provide children with opportunities they might not normally experience.

Our Curriculum and the JCV's 

 Our bespoke curriculum is designed to help children learn the essential knowledge, skills and understanding for each subject, as set out in the National Curriculum and beyond. As a school community we believe that the ethos of Joseph Cash should be built on a foundation of values. We give regular thought to how our values can be used to support children as reflective learners and promote quality teaching and learning. Our core values (JCV's) permeate the whole curriculum and are addressed directly through lessons, assemblies and wider activities, they are the basis for the social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral development of the whole child. We encourage children to consider these values on a daily basis, thereby developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to develop as reflective learners.

The key element of our curriculum, is how it plays a key role in bringing the JCV's to life and ensures that they are the vital spark in our pupil's learning.

How is the Curriculum structured? 

Joseph Cash's focus on curriculum development is always carefully designed to ensure coverage and progression. It provides pupils with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills.  The children's own community, its heritage and traditions are frequently used as a starting point for engaging interest. A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations, engender a sense of personal pride in achievement, and providing a purpose and relevance for learning. 


Curriculum Implementation

 Our creative curriculum is an exciting curriculum for Years 1 to 6 which has been developed by our subject leaders for the teaching and learning of the Foundation subjects:

It is designed to help children learn the essential knowledge, skills and understanding for each of these subjects, as set out in the National Curriculum.

It also plays a key role in how our school's Core Values are brought to life and embedded throughout our pupils' learning. Deliberate links to pupils' learning in English and their topic have been made, particularly through the choice of texts studied. Both Science and RE are taught as discreet subjects, but meaningful links with the current topic will always be made for pupils, whenever possible.


JC Currciulum 



 At the start of every themed topic there is an 'Explorer Day' where children are invited to contribute ideas during a 'brainstorming' session about what they would like to learn about within their given theme. During the 'Explorer' session teacher's plan 'entry point' activities that capture the pupil's interest, enthusiasm and imagination to 'hook' them into learning.

Our curriculum focuses on teaching the key concepts and skills through an inquiry-based approach. Our approach allows children to develop their problem solving skills, by drawing on their own past experience and existing knowledge to discover facts and relationships, resulting in new learning.


Each term has a shared subject focus for Years 1 to 6:


Autumn: 'We are Historians'

Spring: 'We are Innovators'

Summer:  'We are Geographers'

Year Group Overviews 





Throughout the topic children are offered a variety of 'enrichment' activities, such as, trips, excursions and visits from special guests. In addition to this all children experience WOW weeks - children are given the opportunity to spend at least 1 week taking part in a variety of outdoor and enterprise activities linked to their topic learning.

WOW weeks provide children with opportunities they might not normally experience with their families and their community and aim to;  

  • widen the children's horizons, life experience and knowledge of the wider world

  • enhance and engage children in the curriculum

  • help the children to learn a range of challenging skills

  • promote a love of, understanding of and connection with nature

  • give opportunities for children to become more responsible for their actions, and enable them to calculate risks better and show improved self-confidence

  • encourage children to become more active and healthy

 All children in Year 2 through to Year 6 can camp overnight or participate in twilight events. Some of the activities include learning to ride bikes, orienteering, building fires, climbing trees, problem solving, and much, much more.


 We are very proud of our curriculum and the wide opportunities and enriching experiences that we offer our children.  We will always strive to achieve high academic standards without losing sight of the importance of other areas of the curriculum.

Each of our topics culminates in an exciting  'flourish' activity, which pupils will have been working towards and is designed to give pupils' an opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a real life context. Through the series of exciting lessons based on challenge and discovery, our 'flourish' events support our drive to make learning irresistible for children.
