Class Blogs 2017 - 2018

Please see below our learning blogs from the academic year 17/18

From 30.04.18, please see our individual class blogs for updates on our learning.

26.04.18 4KA Iron Man - orange group

In guided reading today, we explored sound words (onomatopoeia) to explore what it might have been like when the Space-bat-angel-dragon landed in Australia. We wrote a shared diary entry.

In Guided Reading today, we have been discussing significant events in Iron Man and ordering them in different ways.

Today in science we started our new topic - Light. We thought about how important light is and guessed what objects were hidden inside ‘feely’ bags. It was hard to predict what some of the objects were.

Today in PSHE, we thought about making decisions and discussing different scenarios. We learned that all decisions can have positive and negative consequences and the decisions we make can have an effect on other people.

Today we began to explore our new Talk for Writing text in English - The Snow Dragon by Vivian French. Here is a link to the story so you can share it at home:

Final seed update!!!!! Shock results!!!!!

We were all very surprised by how much our seeds have grown. However, we were even more surprised to find that the seeds growing inside dark cupboard had grown taller than the seeds on the window sill! We noticed that they were a different colour. The seedlings in the cupboard were yellow, whereas the ones on the window sill were green.

5 FAB TOKENS IF YOU CAN EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THIS IS!

When we checked on our seeds this afternoon, we noticed that there wasn’t much condensation in our cups. We wondered if it is because today is a dull cloudy day so  there was less warmth from the sun to cause evaporation. We were excited to discover that our seeds have begun to grow already.

TBQ: Can I explore how Jesus is important to Christians?

Today in RE, the children found out about the life of Jesus. We discussed how he was crucified and rose again. The children began to read a play script which explored the reasons for Jesus’ death. Tomorrow we will find out more about the Easter story and the ways in which Christians celebrate Easter (it’s not just about eating chocolate!).

26.03.18

We have been exploring images of different types of entertainment throughout history. The children enjoyed exploring how entertainment has changed over time.

4KA 26.03.18

After just a few hours, we can already see evaporation and condensation happening in our water cycle models!

As an introduction to our next topic, Leisure and Entertainment, we have been exploring images of different types of entertainment throughout history. Some of the things we discussed were a mystery to the children, but they enjoyed working out what they might have been.

The children were also very surprised to discover that the first movies were silent and found Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy movies very funny,

TBQ: Can I create and investigate a model of the water cycle?

Today we made a model of the water cycle but before we did it, we planned  our investigation, including our predictions. - Tharaga

”I predicted that condensation will stick to the top of the cling film.” - Layla

”I predict that the seeds won’t grow because they don’t have soil and they won’t be able to stand up.” - Maks

”I predict that there will be less evaporation on the one in the dark cupboard because there is less sunlight and heat.” - Jameel

Silver Home Learning!

The children have chosen their SILVER home learning tasks for next half term. Children can choose from these tasks and bring them into school when complete. I’m looking forward to seeing their creations!

TBQ: Can I investigate when a solid changes state?

Today we investigated what would happen if we melted a special kind of paraffin wax at a low temperature. We discovered that it changed from a white solid substance to a clear liquid. When we put our hands in the wax, we found that it began to solidify very quickly and turned back into a white solid, meaning that it was a reversible change of state. The wax was warm but not too hot. “It made my hand feel heavy.” “It has left my skin feeling soft.” “It looks like a zombie hand!”

We had lots of fun peeling the wax off our hands!

TBQ: Can I explore how water changes state?

The children explored how water changes state. They found out that water can be in one of three states- solid, liquid or gas.

They explored that water can change state as a result of melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation.

TBQ: Can I estimate and measure distances?

We took our maths lesson outside to estimate and measure how far we had thrown a beanbag. The wind meant that taking the measurements was really tricky!

4KA and 4FV 20.03.18

TBQ: Can I create an item of Greek clothing?

The children used their prior learning to create items of clothing inspired by Ancient Greek styles of dress using recycling materials found in the classroom. They did an amazing job and had lots of fun! The boys loved being models!

Can I investigate the melting and freezing temperatures of a material?

The children in 4FV were investigating melting and freezing temperatures of a material. They placed a piece of chocolate on 3 different temperatures of water and observed how long it would take for the chocolate to melt. We found out that the higher the temperature, the faster the chocolate will melt.

TBQ: Can I develop and present ideas?

We decided if we were ‘for’ or ‘against’ being given home learning and worked in small groups to develop our arguments. Using our Growth Mindset skills of making brave choices and trying new things, we had a class debate.

TBQ: Can I develop and present ideas?

We decided if we were ‘for’ or ‘against’ being given home learning and worked in small groups to develop our arguments. Using our Growth Mindset skills of making brave choices and trying new things, we gave a presentation to the rest of the class to share our learning.

This is what we are currently learning about in year 4.

TBQ: Can I generate arguments?

We used partner talk, table talk and whole class talk to generate ideas for and against the topic ‘should primary school children be given home learning?’

We had lots of opinions!
